After managing to expose the Companions, or their leaders at least, as Werewolves and getting the faction banned from Whiterun and other major cities, the Silver Hand took over Jorrvaskr and the work that the Companions used to do before their banishment.
Most of the members of this clan tend to wear balck clothes, including a long cloak or coat. It is their way of being recognised when anywhere in a city. With silvered weapons always at hand, they are the premier Werewolf hunters in Tamriel. Even though they took over for the work the Companions used to take on, this is their primary goal, to eradicate all werewolves from Tamriel, especially the lying Companions.
